FSSAI asks states to step up food checks before Navratri and Diwali

A 29 September advisory calls for targeted inspections and sampling of foods in high festive demand.

FSSAI has asked states, union territories and its regional offices to strengthen inspections and sampling during the festive period.

Which foods are in focus

The 29 September letter names milk products, sweets, snacks and savouries, edible oils, beverages and ghee. It also allows local priorities, such as fasting flours, to reflect regional eating patterns.

It asks officials to target sensitive locations and use Food Safety on Wheels where available. It also calls for inspection and sampling records to be updated on the relevant systems.

An inspection drive is not a recall

The advisory does not establish that every food in these categories is adulterated. It does not identify a particular brand as unsafe. For shoppers, our companion guide covers the pack and seller details worth keeping before buying sweets or ghee.
