FSSAI proposes restricting the paneer name to milk-derived products

The 24 September announcement describes a draft naming amendment, not a final ban on plant-based foods.

FSSAI has proposed an amendment aimed at stopping non-milk-derived analogue products from being marketed as paneer.

What is proposed

The 24 September PIB announcement says the draft would add a clause to the Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales Regulations. Products licensed under the dairy analogue category would have to stop using “Paneer” in their name, label or marketing.

The announcement invites objections and suggestions. It describes a draft, which must not be reported as a final rule already in force.

The useful distinction

A naming dispute does not establish that every alternative product is unsafe. It asks whether the description matches the composition. Our guide starts with the food’s stated name and ingredients, rather than a home test or a claim about an entire category.
